A year and a half of hanging with a local flock and I’ve finally succumbed to taking in one of my own: a certain African Grey whose previous owner went on to seek greener pastures in the afterlife. I had originally decided to dub the little beast ‘Icarus,’ as there’s an abnormal amount of fiery red in the wings, but the DNA tests revealed she’s female. Someone suggested the more feminine ‘Icaresse,’ and it stuck. I’ve so far recorded about a hundred megs of the flock’s collective chattering on my hard drive, along with my own grey beast’s uncanny imitation of a cell phone, a dying smoke detector and a popping wine cork, among other things.

Aside from chopping fresh vegetables for the beast and slinging drinks to keep the electricity on, I came up for air long enough to join The Writer’s Block, a weekly podcast from San Francisco’s KQED. If you’re curious to hear what this author sounds like when slighly dehydrated and barely awake, check out the reading here or point your iTunes here. Spread the word.

The Dude abides.
